Elementary DLI Teacher (Chinese/Spanish)

 

Iron County School District seeks full-time Elementary Dual Language Immersion Teacher (Chinese or Spanish) in Cedar City, Utah and throughout Iron County, Utah.

DUTIES:

(1) Provide learning experiences and teach lessons in the Target Language of Instruction (Chinese or Spanish) to meet objectives by following the District's approved curriculum map provided by the District and the Utah Dual Language Immersion Consortium, which follows the Utah State Core Curriculum;

(2) Teach assigned subjects exclusively in grades 1st through 5th using the Target Language of Instruction (Chinese or Spanish) for the purpose of creating fluency in the Target Language while teaching basic subjects in a dual immersion setting;

(3) Facilitate active learning experiences fluently in the Target Language of Instruction (Chinese or Spanish) for the purpose of engaging learners at the optimum level;

(4) Develop and use instructional materials in the Target Language of Instruction (Chinese or Spanish) suitable for verbal and/or visual instruction of students with a wide range of mental, physical and emotional maturity;

(5) Provide individual and group instruction designed to meet individual needs and motivate students;

(6) Establish and maintain standards of student control required to achieve effective participation in all activities;

(7) Evaluate academic and social growth of students and keep appropriate records;

(8) Communicate with parents through a variety of means;

(9) Hold parent conferences to discuss the individual student's progress and interpret the school program;

(10) Identify student needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems;

(11) Create an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays such as bulletin boards, interest centers, etc.;

(12) Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the District and/or professional growth activities and university courses;

(13) Participate cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop action plans and goals based on a completed evaluation summary;

(14) Select and requisition instructional materials; maintain inventory records;

(15) Cooperate in school-wide supervision of students during out of classroom activities;

(16) Participate in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities;

(17) Provide accurate attendance information in accordance with the procedure established by the school where the teacher is assigned;

(18) Cooperate with the custodian(s) for the general housekeeping needs in the area(s) for which the teacher is assigned;

(19) Teachers are expected to dress in good taste and be well groomed, befitting to members of a respected profession. Cleanliness of self and attire, neatness, and attractive grooming are stressed and expected. Teachers should always dress in a manner that professionally sets them apart from students. Exceptions to the dress limitations are school approved special events or activities; and

(20) Such other related duties and responsibilities as assigned. [NOTE: Work will be performed at elementary schools in the Iron County School District, all of which are located in multiple cities and towns within Iron County, Utah].

 

REQUIREMENTS:

(A) Bachelor's degree in Education, the Target Language of Instruction (Chinese or Spanish), or related field

(B) Hold a valid teaching license issued by the Utah State Board of Education, or be eligible to obtain one within 60 days of hire

(C) Must hold or be eligible to obtain a Dual Language Immersion and World Language endorsements in the Target Language of Instruction (Chinese or Spanish) issued by the Utah State Board of Education;

(D) Pass the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) or OPIc, at the Advanced-Mid level or higher in English and the Target Language of Instruction (Chinese or Spanish). [The English OPI (or OPIc) is waived if the candidate received a post-secondary degree in a country where English is the first language. The OPI (or OPIc) for the Target Language of Instruction (Chinese or Spanish) is waived if the candidate received a post-secondary degree in a country where the Target Language of Instruction (Chinese or Spanish) is the first language.]

(E) Demonstrable ability to:

     (a) Read, analyze, and interpret technical journals and legal documents

     (b) Define, troubleshoot, and solve problems involving concrete variables and situations, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; (c) Apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs

     (d) Carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form

     (e) Plan and implement lessons based on grade level objectives and the needs and abilities of assigned students

     (f) Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents;

     (g) Effectively present information and respond to common inquiries or complaints to/from parents, community, and students; and

     (h) Lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds; and

     (I) Demonstrably good oral and written communication skills.
