The American Association of University Professors’ (AAUP) Department of Organizing and Services is pleased to announce a professional position as Director, to be filled as soon as possible. The preferred location for this position is Washington, DC, but we will consider remote work/flexible location. The Director of Organizing and Services will lead the AAUP’s Department of Organizing and Services and will play an essential role in supporting the AAUP’s recent affiliation with the American Federation of Teachers and championing the AAUP’s racial equity initiative. The Director will travel widely and will work under the direction of AAUP’s Executive Director. This position requires a commitment to racial equity, especially as it pertains to organizing, and involves working with diverse individuals both inside and outside of the AAUP office.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Advise and coordinate with the Executive Director and the elected leadership on organizational planning and annual budgeting. Manage implementation of AAUP priorities related to organizing and chapter services, including the successful implementation of the AAUP/AFT affiliation and the AAUP’s racial equity initiative. Manage the work of the department, including direct supervision of the departmental staff. Plan and lead the AAUP’s national organizing program, which includes both internal and external organizing campaigns. These responsibilities include working closely with the AAUP’s American Federation of Teacher’s counterparts and AAUP staff. Plan and lead the national chapter service program. This work includes working closely with the AAUP’s American Federation of Teacher’s counterparts, and AAUP staff. Manage the development and implementation of internal and external union organizing campaigns. Manage the development and implementation of member-led organizing campaigns in a non-collective bargaining setting. Work collaboratively with the American Federation of Teachers, the AAUP’s union partner on organizing plans. Oversee the development of education and training programs, including the annual AAUP Summer Institute. Represent the Association before other faculty organizations, college and university bodies, and other unions and professional associations. Coordinate with Association leaders and staff on specific projects including responsibility for planning content for campus, regional, and national training events. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Five or more years of work experience developing and leading internal and external union organizing campaigns. Five or more years of work experience supervising staff. Experience managing organizing programs preferred. Experience with unions required. Experience with higher education unions preferred. Demonstrated experience working with leaders and members from national, state-level, or local affiliates to build strong organizing structures and in supporting local-level field services. Demonstrated expertise with organizing databases. Experience and demonstrated ability to work with professional groups and individuals. Commitment to racial equity required. Demonstrated experience with racial equity or DEI initiatives preferred. Superior written and oral communication skills and computer proficiency skills—including working familiarity with MS Office suite. Ability to assist with the development and execution of a national strategic plan. Valid driver’s license and a willingness to travel regionally and nationally, sometimes on long-term assignment. Willingness to work evening and weekend hours, as required. Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
Compensation
Salary range: $120,000 for minimum qualifications; higher salary for preferred qualifications and experience. Generous benefits package.
Position Classification
This is a regular, full-time Senior Program Officer position with an option for part-time telework. It is categorized as a management/supervisory position and is excluded from the staff union bargaining unit. This is an exempt position and ineligible for overtime pay.
